Alkaline pre-treatment of Empty Fruit Bunch (EFB) for biogas production
Natural gas is one type of energy source that people rely on. With the depletion of natural gas over time, an alternative energy source is needed to replace natural gas and it is biogas. With a huge amount of palm oil production, huge amount of waste is released and one of them is empty fruit bunch (EFB). EFB is categorized as lignocellulosic with its compositions mainly cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. With the help of microorganism, cellulose can be converted into methane gas with anaerobic digestion process. There are many kinds of processes to increase the amount of methane production such as higher anaerobic digestion temperature, physical pre-treatment and alkaline pre-treatment. In this experiment, EFB as the substrate of biogas was used tornfind out the effect of those processes and compare it with previous research. After 20 days of experiment, higher anaerobic digestion temperature, physical and alkaline pre-treatment with NaOH processes can increase the amount of biogas produced. In alkaline pre-treatment, two chemical concentration and two pre-treatment temperature were analysed. The result was 12% NaOH concentration at 100 0 C pre-treatment temperature gave the best result among other concentration and pre-treatment temperature and can produce 3847.1 ml of methane in 20 days.
