Fabrication of ultrafiltration membrane from polyethylene terephthalate bottle waste and the effect of polyethylene glycol as additive on the membran performance

Ambani, Syarifa - Personal Name; Kusumocahyo, Samuel P. - Personal Name; Sutanto, Hery - Personal Name;

Urbanization and lifestyle act as driving factors for using disposable plastic bottle for beverages packaging as it is more convenient. Owing to rise consumption, recycle of the disposable plastic bottle is needed. Ultrafiltration (UF) membrane is important in separation technology due to its high advantages. Therefore, polyethylene terephthalate waste bottle was developed as UF membrane material and effect of additive was studied. The membranes were fabricated by phase inversion technique where phenol used as solvent and polyethylene glycol 400 and 4000 were used as additive. After membrane casted onto glass plate, immersed in coagulation bath containing water- ethanol mixture. Performance of the membrane was evaluated using FTIR analysis andrnUF experiment to measure pure water flux and bovine serum albumin solution rejection. The result showed that larger molecular weight and increasing of PEG concentration increased permeate flux and improve hydrophilicity of the membrane. Membrane with 7.7% PEG 4000 had the highest pure water permeate flux and membrane with 11.1% PEG 400 had rejection 93.88% of BSA.
