Self-disclosure level of first-year college students in same-sex friendships and cross-sex friendships in Jakarta and Tangerang
This study analyzes the self-disclosure level on same-sex friendships and cross-sex friends of first-year college students in Jakarta and Tangerang area. To do so, this study employs the theory of Social Penetration to explore the level and process of self-disclosure, and Hill and Stull's assumptions to explore factors that influence self-disclosure in same-sex friendships and cross-sex friendships. This study is using online survey and in-depth interview with first-year college students in Jakarta and Tangerang as its target sample. The total sample collected for this study consists of 128 respondents. Moreover, the data was analyzed by using multiple regression analysis in SPSS version 25.0 and triangulations. The findings of study showed that the self-disclosure level of same-sex friendships and cross-sex friendships are statistically equal. However, in-depth research done through interview suggests there is a difference such as topics of conversation, languages used. Furthermore, sex-role norms is the factor that influence self-disclosure of both same-sex and cross-sex friendship the most.
