Designing, constructing and testing an ultrasonic pipe surface imaging tool

Budiadji, Lukman - Personal Name; Arko - Personal Name;

Pipe defect inspection is an important issue in industry, especially those which deal with oil and chemicals. This project develops an ultrasonic imaging technique and tool for a non-destructive test method of cracked surfaces inside the pipeline. The author undertook the design and implementation of such a pipe-inspection tool especially in oil field industry as a thesis project with the aim of investigating several new improvements on this idea. The ultrasonic sensor rotates to scan the surface. It can detect the crack by focusing the transverse wave beams at every point on the rugged cracked surface and receiving the backscattered wave signal from that point. The sensor SRF 04, used in this project, has burst frequency of 40 kHz. The echoes are analyzed by microcontroller to measure the uniform distance. Any slightly different distance will be considered as the crack. The surfaces will be sent and imaged in the computer via serial communication, from which the angle of crack and depth is estimated. The calibration feature is established to make the measurement more accurate.
