Developing intelligent software to self-train the musical ear

Seymour, Christopher - Personal Name; Kumaradjaja, Richard - Personal Name;

Contemporary educational software is used in environments where teachers and lecturers are not present. Such software can truly benefit from expert systems. This computer simulated expertise can enhance the learning experience by substituting for tasks that cannot be performed by the teacher. All this, provided appropriate techniques are used to encode the teacher's knowledge.rnrnThe purpose of this research is to take on the role of a knowledge engineer and develop an expert system that can simulate a music teacher within the domain of musical ear training. Knowledge engineering techniques are applied in order to extract an expert's knowledge and encode that knowledge into software. JESS, a rule engine for the Java platform is integrated into the system in order to aid the complex decision making and heuristics of a music teacher.rnrnThrough this research, it is proved that intelligent software can be developed for musical ear training. Despite it not being intelligent in a true sense, this paper shows that expert systems are a sufficiently reliable solution for the simulation of expertise and complex decision making.
