The Role of educational institutions to increase the number of entrepreneurs in Indonesia

Ganis, Safana Nadira - Personal Name; Habir, Ahmad Derry - Personal Name;

Today's daily life is filled with innovations and fast changes. To be able to survive, everyone must improve their capabilities to overcome the dynamic condition. Interestingly, the experts clearly define that entrepreneurs, through their innovations and willingness, have capabilities to overcome the above situation. The number of entrepreneurs in Indonesia is only 0.18% of the population, in which a great sociologist, David McClelland, stated for a country to develop it should have entrepreneurs at least 2% of the citizens. Since entrepreneurship can be taught, then this is the area where entrepreneurship education can play a major and important role. rnThe purpose of this research is to define the role of educational institution to prepare the student to become entrepreneurs and increase the number of entrepreneurs. This research will use qualitative approach based on multiple-case study of universities that conduct entrepreneurship programs. From the findings, researcher concludes that the universities are able to prepare the students through various curriculum, methodology, and process. Their abilities came from emphasizing the importance of experimental learning; by doing business directly in real form, with the support of business theories. Moreover, there are also other factors, to determine whether a graduate can be a successful entrepreneur or not. Despite that limitation, the increment of the number of entrepreneurs through entrepreneurship education is still very needed and useful, especially in Indonesia.
