The lack of national interest in developing heritage tourism destinations: case study of the forgotten trowulan archaeological site
The Trowulan Archaeological Site is the only city site of Majapahit Kingdom in Indonesia, which is located in the Trowulan Village, Mojokerto City. The size of the site is 9 x 11 km and contains of temples, tombs, archaeological remains, ancient canal and pool. This research is undertaken to find out the reason why Trowulan become undeveloped tourist attraction and the efforts of the government to develop this site. The research is case study research using qualitative and quantitative data. The data was collected through in-depth interviews and primary and secondary data collection. The Trowulan Archaeological Site is mainly used for research and educational purposes. The inexistence of good tourist facilities and infrastructure condition to support this destination have caused it become undeveloped tourist attraction. The lack of participation from the local community to avoid destruction to the site creates more problems with no clear solution for so many years.
