Production and evaluation of caffeine content topical availability in spent-coffee body scrub cream

Marlyani, Alisa - Personal Name; Kartawiria, Irvan S. - Personal Name;

Spent-coffee, as the waste from the brewing process of coffee grounds, can still be utilized in the topical formulation, because it still contains caffeine. The benefits of caffeine through topical application are it can act as an antioxidant, reduce the risk of skin cancer, slenderize thighs and hips, and reduce the appearance of cellulite. This thesis utilized spent-coffee to produce one of cosmetic products, body scrub cream. The natural caffeine in spent-coffee is utilized as the active ingredient and the spent- coffee particles are utilized as the scrub particles in the cream. This thesis deals with finding the optimum leaching process of spent-coffee which can give the highest amount of caffeine leached from the spent-coffee and the optimum composition of spent-coffee body scrub cream with good acceptance on the skin. The variables are the amount of spent-coffee in the product and the spent-coffee particle size. A sensory analysis was done with some panelists to measure the level of acceptance of the product on the skin. The caffeine content in the product is calculated theoretically using the result obtained from the optimization of the leaching process. The result shows that the optimum spent-coffee body scrub cream is the sample which contained 10.755% of spent-coffee with the particle size 0.63 mm. It contained 0.165% of caffeine.
