Designing and constructing a flexible conveyor system and analyzing its implementation in a loop configuration

Material Handling System is a very important part of a Flexible ManufacturingrnSystem (FMS). Generally, the material handling system is only considered as a non-rnadded value system which is used to transfer the workpiece among the FMS stations.rnHowever, the system contributes to the manufacturing lead time which is veryrnimportant issues that determines the productivity of an FMS. Therefore, anrnimprovement in the material handling system will also improves the overallrnperformance of the FMS.rnAs a non-added value system, the improvement concern is to improve the flexibilityrnlevel of the system. This thesis is focused on designing and constructing a flexiblernmaterial handling system using belt conveyor. The flexibility features are mainlyrnbased on the controllable limited belt-length-adjustment at both ends of the conveyorrnmodule, so that several modules can be arranged to form flexible routingrnconfigurations in addition to many other modular benefits. Two directional workpiecerntransfer, branching, and temporary storage are the extra benefits obtained from thernproposed flexible conveyor. Subsystems and overall testing experiment implementingrnmodular control strategy showed that the proposed system can improve productivity.
