Designing and constructing automated mini thermal thin aluminium sheet metal cutting machine

Cutting is one of the fundamental process in sheet metalworking. Relatively thin sheets of metal are cut to various regular or irregular shapes and size. In this thesis project, thermal cutting machine is designed and constructed to accommodate the sheet metal process. A capacitive discharge cutter welder, which uses the principle of high current short circuit, cut the thin sheet metal by melting or vaporizing the metal particles. These thin sheets of metal are used in automobile, trains, airplanes, farm, construction equipment, appliances, office furniture and others. Therefore, an automated machine with the CNC system principles is designed and constructed to operate the process. A three-axis (x, y and z axis) CNC router moves and positions the welder probe to designated cutting coordinate. The three-axis router is interfaced with a computer and alphanumeric codes are entered to the system as an input to generate the cutting tool path in cartesian coordinate system. With this system, a precise and repetitive process can be achieved. A HMI (Human Machine Interface) is installed in the computer to provide the machine control interface and toolpath simulation.
