Through time, there are many cases of lower arm disabilities caused by birth defects or accidents. This disability impairs people from manipulating object. This project will try to design a system to replace the gripping capability of the hand and the versatility of a wrist to move the arm left and right. The mechanism to simulate the fingers is an animatronics arm made from modified chain inspired from the TV-series ?Mythbusters?. The wrist and the fingers are moved directly using a system of motor-gearbox attached at the middle of the structure. Through various design, testing, and trial and error, the system can finally operate smoothly. This myoelectric prosthesis will be controlled by the flexing of the upper part of the arm, namely bicep. The theory behind the system is that as the bicep flexes, it produces voltage, and with the help of a technique called electromyography (EMG) the signals can be read. To obtain the signal, three surface electrodes will be used. The signal obtained is then amplified, filtered, then rectified in order to obtain a clear useful signal. The signal is then fed to an Analog Digital Converter to be distinguished into three different states, namely low state (where the bicep is relax), medium state (where the bicep is mildly flexed), and high state (where the bicep is strongly flexed). These modes can then be used to choose and trigger the type of movement available. The whole project is made in a small scale arm that will serve as the basis of future prosthesis body parts developments by utilizing the same principle.
