Industry still uses manual machine tools such as lathe and milling machine to process workpieces. Typically, manual machine tools depend on the ability of the operator to read the axis accurately. The quality of the wokpieces decreases as the manual operator makes mistake in reading the axis. By using digital read out (DRO), more accurate and faster machining can be achieved. In this thesis, 4 axes DRO is designed utilising seven segment display. The four axes consist of 6 digits for x, y, z axis and 4 digits for the spindle speed. 22 seven-segments are used and driven with some intregated circuits such as BCD to seven segment, decoder, and ULN2003 transistor. A multiplexing technique controls the display system. Microcontroller Atmega128 is the heart of the DRO.
