Text reader: an intelligent system for people with visual impairment
Visual impairment is a vision loss is caused by trauma, disease, and congenital or degenerative conditions. This disability condition makes visual impairment people difficult or even could not understand at all the textual information. The objective of the research is to make an intelligence system to help visual impairment people in Indonesia to understand textual information from a printed paper with freeware and also open source. The technology that used is Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and Text?to-speech Synthesizer (TTS). OCR is a product of modern technology which used to convert the text from paper into digital textual format that can save and use it in the computer. In addition, TTS is a technology that has long been used to convert editable textual format into audio format. In summary, text reader system is the unification of OCR and TTS technologies that captures a text from printed paper and converted into a voice. The system will be developed in C language on Linux operating system (Debian 5.0).
