The impact of the violation of intellectual property rights : a case of copyright piracy in DVD industry towards original DVD retailer X in Jakarta

The thesis basically discussed about the Intellectual Property Rights especially about copyrights. The research covered about the importance of Intellectual Property Rights, the implementation of Intellectual Property Rights Law in Indonesia, the description about piracy activities in Indonesia and the impact of the copyright piracy in movie industry towards original DVD retailer, which in this case is Retailer X. From the result and discussion, the researcher found out that the protection for the Intellectual Property Rights is very important in order to protect creativity and support people to keep inventing new creations. In addition to that, the implementation of the copyright law in Indonesia still faces many problems and needs a lot of enforcement in order to create an environment that free from pirated products. Lastly, this DVD piracy phenomenon also gives significant impacts toward Retailer X in terms of sales, profits and targeted customers.
