The Challenge to manage tourism destination sustainability: focus on the impact of natural resources utilization in relation to the growth of tourism in Bali

Handoko, Jeremiah - Personal Name; Umarjadi, Utami - Personal Name;

Tourism is described as one of the world?s largest and fastest growing sectors (WTO, 2002). The WTO projected that worldwide visitor arrivals will reach an estimated 1.0 billion by 2010 and 1.6 billion by 2020. However, the large number of people travelling to tourists destinations often exceeds carrying capacity and can impact the environment in various ways. Being the most popular tourist destination in Indonesia, Bali was developed rapidly. The rapid growth of tourism can be clearly seen in Kuta. This massive unplanned development of tourism in Kuta has brought not only positive, but also negative impacts on its natural environment, social, economic and cultural aspects. The purpose of this thesis is to ascertain whether Bali as a tourist destination has grown in a sustainable manner, in balance with the utilization of its resources, and also to find out the actual and potential contributions of stakeholders involved in supporting sustainable tourism development in Bali. The research method used is the deductive evaluative method. This study uses quantitative with supporting qualitative data. The study will also be correlated with the related theoretical concepts and logical explanation. The data collected is a combination of literature research form books, websites, seminar papers, interviews and questionnaires with the respective sources.
