Motives of users' online self-disclosure: an analysis on how social media become the new platform for self-disclosure

The huge popularity of social media has led into a massive online self-disclosurernphenomenon in the Jakarta society. The purpose of this research paper is to analyzernthe motives and factors influencing users? decision to self-disclose in social media.rnIn-depth Focus Group Discussions conducted with two groups of different gendersrnfind out that users? gender, personality and self-esteem influences the way they self-rndisclose in social media, and that the main motives of users? online self-disclosure arernmainly to manage their identities, to express themselves, to gain social acceptance, torngain other people?s attention or sympathy, and to create ?as well as? to maintainrnrelationship with others, where intimacy is the goal.rnSince many institutions have been utilizing social media as one of their strategicrncommunication tools, it is hoped that this study will help these institutions inrnstructuring effective messages that will be sent through social media by identifyingrntargets? profiles and their motives of online self-disclosure.
