Homosexuality in the media: a case study of exposure and tolerance

The controversy of homosexuality is widely spread, and even in somerncountries, including Indonesia it is still considered as a taboo. The mediarnportrayed homosexuality by using several different viewpoints, characters andrnstories, some of which are prejudiced, too stereotypical and even promotingrnhomophobia.rnThe researcher uses qualitative method to study the media portrayals ofrnhomosexuality and also to analyze how tolerant and exposed SGU studentsrnare to those portrayals. The findings of this research are gathered byrnconducting focus group discussions towards SGU students. To enrich thernfindings from the perspective of the media, an in-depth interview wasrnconducted with Joko Anwar, an Indonesian prominent media person whosernwork is largely dedicated to bring homosexuality to the mainstreamrnIndonesian media, and who publically acknowledge himself as a homosexual.rnThe findings include SGU students? attitudes toward homosexuality in general,rnwhether or not media portrayals of homosexuality refine their knowledge, and The findings include SGU students? attitudes toward homosexuality in general,rnwhether or not media portrayals of homosexuality refine their knowledge, and change their attitudes toward homosexuality.
