Designing, constructing, and controlling a semi automatic shielded metal arc welding device
Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) is one of the most common welding processes used in fabrication, construction, even in maintenance and repair industry. Despite of the wide usage of the SMAW, only a trained welder can weld well using it. In this thesis project, a semi-automatic SMAW device is designed and constructed to replace human arm in performing the welding process. A one-axis (z-axis) linear motion system is implemented in the device to generate the approaching speed of the electrode. The electrode is gripped and its angle is adjusted with the electrode gripper. The welding process is controlled by a microcontroller ATmega328 with the help of voltage and current sensor as the feedback. With this system, a precise and repetitive welding process can be achieved. Furthermore, a precise welding parameter (welding speed, electrode feed rate, and arc voltage) can be controlled with the device.
