The Coexistence between conservatism of Acehnese culture and contemporary Saman dance

Aceh is a notable area located in North Sumatera, which has been known as conservative area as Indonesians perceived. Aceh has various cultures, some of them have been popularly known and Saman Dance is probably one of the most popular dances. This research is intended to examine contemporary Saman Dance iconography and how it coexists with conservatism of Acehnese culture as it is not a hindrance for Saman Dance to be popular. Moreover, how Saman Dance can eliminate Indonesians' perception of Aceh as a conservative area. This research is a descriptive study. The methods to be used are qualitative data supported with quantitative data using observation, interview, and questionnaire as research techniques. Source of data are primary and secondary. This research shows; Indonesians knowledge towards Aceh culture and Saman Dance are still low and Indonesians still perceive Aceh being conservative, and Saman Dance has alteration to became contemporary Saman Dance. The coexistence of Acehnese with contemporary Saman Dance that prove Aceh is not a conservative area.
