Development of antimicrobial liquid mouthwash from lemongrass essential oil
In this research, the antibacterial activity of lemongrass essential oil is being developed into an antimicrobial mouthwash. The purpose of this research is to develop a mouthwash and attempt to replace chemical compound in the mouthwash with natural substance as antibacterial agent (active ingredient). 0.79%, 1.26% and 6.4% of lemongrass essential oil concentration were formulated with 0.5% of peppermint, 0.4% of spearmint powder, 12% of xylitol powder, polysorbate 80 as emulsifier agents and water as a solvent. There are two types of analysis: first, inhibitory activity analysis of S.aureus, the mouthwash against Staphylococcus aureus was tested. Seconds is mouthwash application, three volunteers gargled before and after using mouthwash. The result of these methods was small decreasing number of Staphylococcus aureus at 0 second to 30 seconds of each sample and for mouthwash application analysis before and after gives a tendency of decreasing number of mouth microorganism.
