Drying of heat sensitive material using compressed dry air

Aryanti, Regina - Personal Name; Kartawiria, Irvan S. - Personal Name; Gunawan, Paulus - Personal Name;

Most of drying procedures applies excessive heat which can damage heat sensitive material, including foods, pharmaceutical, neutraceutical substances, herbs, spices and herbal medicines. Drying approach can be categorized into two types which are evaporative drying and diffusive drying. Evaporative drying utilizes heat as the driving force while diffusive makes use of different vapor pressure as the driving force. Diffusive drying requires a media with very low vapor pressure to release the moisture from the product which can be supplied by compressed dry air in pharmaceutical industry. The objective of this research is to develop drying process based on diffusion principles using compressed dry air. Process development starts with mathematical modeling, building equipment prototype, validate the model and verify the model with prototype. Lactose granule (50 g and 70 g) was dried from 11.38% to 4.75% in 85 seconds with compressed dry air at moisture content 0.0005% using flow rates 1.47×10-2 m3/s, 1.58×10-2 m3/s, 1.67×10-2 m3/s (1.3, 1.6, and 1.8 bar). The diffusive drying model developed in this research has been successfully validated against physical behavior. The accuracies of the model is 84.24- 99.61% in various conditions. It can be concluded that the compressed dry air in pharmaceutical industry is suitable for diffusive drying process.
