Comparisons of characteristics and qualities of eucheuma cottonii in some regions in Indonesia
The study purpose is to asses the quality of ATC from Eucheuma cottonii collected from different regions in Indonesia. The research was conducted by choosing some producing regions of E. cottonii in Indonesia, which are, Belitung (Bangka Belitung, South Sumatra), Lampung (South Sumatra) and Nusa Tenggara Barat. E. cottonii was treated with alkali to produce Alkali Treated Cottonii (ATC). Evaluations were performed for viscosity, gel strength, yield, ash content, acid insoluble ash, Clean Anhydrous Weed (CAW), impurities, sulfate content, water content, gelling point and melting point of the treated samples. Based on the result, The best quality ATC was achieved by that processed from seaweed of Lampung which has the highest yield (41.33┬▒10.4) %, viscosity (582 ┬▒15.13) cPs, and gel strength (602.89┬▒9.09) g/cm2. The evaluation of all ATC from the three regions still meet the standard quality specifications of ATC established by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)
