Design and simulation of ultrasound beamformer based on fpga (field programmable gate array)
Ultrasound scanner is one of the imaging modalities that is widely used for clinical examination since it is safe, cheap, and portable compared to other imaging modalities such as CT, MRI, and X-ray radiography. Despite the fact, ultrasound scanners in Indonesia are still imported, thus causing the high amount of money that should be paid by the patients for each medical examination. Currently, research and development on medical ultrasound are still conducted both on the hardware and software. The aim is to get high performance, small size, and low cost ultrasound scanner. Research on the hardware is mainly focused on the digital beamformer, analog front end and probe. This study explores the utilization of FPGA to be programmed as ultrasound beamformer and other functionalities such as digital signal processing and I/O processing. The main task of the beamforming is to control the directionality of signal transmission and reception so that the signals will come and go in on desired direction, and hence good image quality will be obtained. While also serving other functionalities, this module can be considered as the main brain' of the ultrasound scanner. To speed up the research
