Development of sustained release dosage form of caffeine

Caffeine is the most commonly used analeptics, and widely consumed by most of the people around the world to increase the mental and physical energy and thus enabling the consumer to stay fresh and awake. However, most of the consumer of caffeine got over stimulated by the stimulating effect of caffeine from constant consumption of caffeine and may lead to jitters, gastric irritation and other side effects. Sustained release dosage form of caffeine enables the consistent flow of the caffeine's stimulating effect throughout the day, and could decrease the amount of consumption of caffeine, which is not yet exposed in Indonesia. This research conducted the development of sustained release dosage form of Caffeine granule by coating with Kollicoat® SR30D with 3 different weight gain variation, 15%, 20% and 25%. The result shown the sustained release property of the granule was higher as the coating weight gain increases.
