Development of pilot scale dryer for heat sensitive material using compressed dry air

Cokro, Hendy - Personal Name; Kartawiria, Irvan S. - Personal Name; Gunawan, Paulus - Personal Name;

This research aims to develop upscale drying unit with diffusion drying principles. Based on previous study, the design of the unit operation use fluidized bed approach because it gives an efficient air solid contact. Critical process parameter for up-scaling is determined. The behavior of drying operations for lactose granules was investigated. The result shows that drying process using minimum fluidization velocity has the same moisture content reduction rate with drying process using larger fluidization velocity. The process of diffusive drying for heat sensitive material by means of compressed dry air could be operated with batch size up to 700 grams. The time needed to dry 500 grams lactose granules from 16.22% to 2.42% is 1200 seconds and to dry 700 grams lactose from 16.25% to 3.41% needs 1500 seconds. The mathematical model build by Aryanti (2012) was then verified. The comparison between theoretical and experimental results shows that the model is applicable for pilot scale production with accuracy of 90.65%-97.82%.
