Development of particle size determination model in fluidized bed granulator

Fluidized bed granulator (FBG) is well known as a one-step, enclosed operation for granulation process. But until now the particle growth kinetic in FBG operation is still unknown. The objective of this research is to understand the particle growth kinetic inside the FBG column and its correlation with initial particle size and wetting agent flow rate. Based data collection was done using lab-scale FBG with three different initial particle sizes and flow rate of wetting agent as the main parameter of the process. From data collection, mathematical model of particle growth kinetic in FBG operation was build and validated. From the observation, it is concluded that particle growth kinetic in FBG operation follow three different phases, namely linear, stationary and breakage. This happened due to nucleation, growth and breakage process which happened at the same time. It also concluded that wetting agent flow rate will be proportional with the granule growth, while initial particle growth is inversely proportional with the granule growth. Proposed linear phase model were tested using particle with Dpi 200 ┬╡m at different flow rates. The difference between predicted and experimental result particle size is 8-16%.
