Designing an improved and qualified passive vaccine carrier for pharmaceutical vaccine products
Vaccination is one of the most practical options to prevent disease. Vaccine is a sensitive biological substance and therefore requires special handling. As the last part of the cold chain, vaccine carrier becomes critical equipment to deliver the vaccine to the patient. In Indonesia, breakages of the cold chain due to temperature swing higher or lower than recommended temperature range are still found. Available vaccine carrier can still be improved to provide better performance, shape, weight, robustness, and price. This study proposed a design of passive vaccine carrier with having hexagonal outer shape and cylindrical inner shape. The insulations used 5 cm polyurethane foam and 1 cm vacuum insulation. Between them, the cooling system is integrated to the container. The vial holder is using a vacuum thermos flask to avoid direct exposure from environment and mechanical shock when taken out of the insulation container. The design was qualified base on WHO standard and can stand for 15 hours 17.5 minutes in 43.307oC average ambient temperature. The design was justified with thermodynamics and heat transfer principle of conduction.rnrnNOTES: The CD could not be displayed due to the maximum size.
