The impact of Japanese anime and manga on teenagers in Jakarta

Kitamura, Kazuhiro - Personal Name; Melissa, Ezmieralda - Personal Name;

During the past few years, Japanese popular culture has gained popularity around the world. In Indonesia, translated Japanese comics or manga occupy more than seventy per cent of the comic market. Several of translated Japanese animated television programmes or anime have also ranked on the top ten popular anime series list. Considering these facts, the main purpose of this study is to analyse why Indonesian teenagers consume Japanese popular culture, especially anime and manga, and also what impact these two types of Japanese media have on them in their daily lives. The data was collected through a focus group discussion and in-depth interviews with Indonesian teenagers in Jakarta. The results show that Indonesian teenagers consume both anime and manga to pass the time, relax, learn about the Japanese culture and language, and also to enhance their relationship with others. The results also indicate that both anime and manga are integral to their daily lives. Family members and peer group affect their selection and preference for anime and manga genres. The Internet provides access to a wider range of anime and manga genres and stories, including Boys? Love genre.
