Utilization of Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunch for Insulated Sandwich Panel Core

Sari, Indri Kartika - Personal Name; Legowo, Evita H. - Personal Name; Kartawiria, Irvan S. - Personal Name;

Indonesia produced as much as 26.5 million metric ton of CPO (Crude Palm Oil) in 2012. With massive number of CPO produced, huge waste of empty fruit bunches are produced. Most palm oil industry utilizes the empty fruit bunches for fertilizer. in the other hand, empty fruit bunch composed of natural fibres which have potential as core material for green insulated sandwich panel. Insulated sandwich panel with empty fruit bunch as core material were made. Objectives of this research were define the types of adhesive, concentration of adhesive, compare the thermal conductivity of insulated sandwich panel with common material and investigate the internal condensation inside the panel. the research experiment was conducted by shredding, washing, drying, mixing with adhesive, pressing and covering. the thermal conductivity of sandwich panel was measured in steady state heat transfer in a glass container. the internal condensation also investigates using the same technique as thermal conductivity experiment. Adhesive used in this experiment are Poly-Vinyl Chloride based adhesive and Chloroprene based adhesive. the result showed that Poly-Vinyl Chloride adhesive is better than Chloroprene based adhesive in term of stability. Lower concentration of adhesive will result in lower density of panel which lower the thermal conductivity as well. All samples have almost the same thermal conductivity value compared to reference which is about 0.03 Watt/Meter.Kelvin. the density of samples ranged between 0.18 gram/cm3- 0.31 gram/cm3. the result showed there is no internal condensation inside the sandwich panel.
