Utilization of Palm Fatty Acid Distillate as Source of Squalene

Silangen, Priska Elianti - Personal Name; Legowo, Evita H. - Personal Name; Sutanto, Hery - Personal Name;

Indonesia is included as one of the largest palm oil production in the world and produce around 23,500,000 tons of palm oil in 2011. Besides palm oil as the main product, there are some valuable by-products and waste from the palm oil industry. Palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD) is one of the palm oil by-products that contain free fatty acid and bioactive compound. Palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD), a by-product of deodorization and deacidification in palm oil refining, contains about 1.03% squalene. the objective of this research is utilization of palm oil waste as source of squalene from palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD). to isolate the squalene from PFAD, this research using Soxhlet extraction and saponification process. the recovered squalene was analyzed from total lipid extracts using FTIR Spectroscopy and Thin Layer Chromatography analysis. the optimum extraction was obtained 2 hours extraction time, resulted in 90.29 % lipid extract. the optimum saponification condition was obtained at 2 M KOH concentrations, reaction temperature 70 0C, and reaction time 0.5 h with 85.25 % unsaponifiable component obtained.
