Preliminary study of antivirus for human immunodeficiency virus (hiv) using protease enzyme (bromelain)
Bromelain is a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapple fruit. In medical field, bromelain have been recommended as a therapeutic approaches for viral and malignant disease. The objective of this research was to do a preliminary study to find ways to destroy Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) with an antivirus by relating characteristic of protease enzyme (bromelain) with the shape of the virus that posses viral envelope at its outermost layer, containing protein. The research was done by incubating HIV-positive serum with various concentration of bromelain solution for 4 hours at 37┬░C. The result of HIV 1&2 test Mono? shows negative result after incubation with concentration 10mg/ml which have specific activity of 5.88 U/mg protein. The result of experiment also shows that the treatment have no significant impact on albumin and globulin concentration. Further in-vivo trials also shows that bromelain from pineapple stem juice could improve the CD4 count of HIV-positive patients.
