Process improvement in production of corn starch based pharmaceutical hard capsule shell
The aim of this research is to improve the performance of corn starch hard capsule production, developed in previous research (Anthony, 2009). The previous research result was brittle, and required three time of thickness to obtain the similar strength as gelatin-based capsule. The improvement was achieved by observing the effect of changing in composition of glycerol, carrageenan, soya protein, and water. Critical process steps were also evaluated.rnThe additional of water (7.06%) yielded strength increase 635%, which is achieved due to better gelatinization. The temperature maintenance and setting process were added to overall production process and this gives better repeatability of process (Cpk of -0.45) compared to previous research (Cpk of -1.85). Capsule can be produced at the thickness of 0.125mm,rncomparable to gelatin-based capsule of 0.102mm. Mechanical test shows the capsule film produced using the improved method have increased tensile strength of 8.092 MPa, strain at break 18.67%, and young?s modulus 0.170 GPa. Optimum moisture content of film was found to be at 9.49%
