Pratiwi, Iradati - Personal Name; Kartawiria, Irvan S. - Personal Name;

Water extract and essential oil of Piper betle Linn have been studied for its composition and antimicrobial activities against Pityrosporum ovale, yeast that caused dandruff using an agar well diffusion and disk diffusion assay. Water extract in this study was divided into water extract without and with reflux. Chemical analysis of water extract identified 4 components namely 4-Terpineol, chavicol, eugenol and diethyl phthalate. This extract has been tested against Pityrosporum ovale with volume of 10 ?l, 60 ?l and 120 ?l and showed no inhibitory activity in all volume. Essential oil obtained from water steam distillation consists of 44 compounds. Chavicol 16.92%, m-eugenol 15.78%, p-eugenol 13.72%, eugenol acetate 7.01%, chavicol acetate 6.03%, germacrene D 4.33%, caryophyllene 4.15%, 4-Terpineol 3.98%, 4-Allyl-1,2-diacetoxybenzene 3.87%, and beta-Phellandrene 2.68% are the 10 main components, comprising 78.47% of the oil. Essential oil showed antimicrobial activity in volume of 5 ?l and 10 ?l , with result of 25.55┬▒1.63 mm and 57.33┬▒1.82 mm respectively. Shampoo formulation with 5% betle oil showed inhibition zone 16.90 ┬▒ 2.27 mm the result was approximately equal with antifungal medicated shampoo that contain 2% of ketokonazole which showed inhibition zone about 17.80 ┬▒ 1.08 mm.
