The role of Manufacturing Execution System (MES) in manufacturing companies in Indonesia

tjindra, muliawan - Personal Name; Indrayadi, Yuki - Personal Name;

The manufacturing industries in indonesia are facing both external and internal problems that affect their competitiveness in the market in term of cost and quality. This research paper attempt to address one of the internal problems i.e. productivity related issues using manufacturing execution system technology.rnThree companies from the food and beverage sector were selected for case study as the basis of the work. A survey was also conducted for additional data and information for comparison purpose. The purpose of this research is to find the role of mes in the selected manufacturing sectors. If a significant role can be concluded then the obstacles for its implementation would be further identified, especially on answering key issues whether the mes from international vendors can be used in indonesia, and whether the mes supports the practice of good corporate governance in term of profit, people, and planet.rnStructured interview and questionnaires were used in data and information collection. Mes requirements were evaluated based on the 11 functions as defined by mesa international. Finally the research questions and hypothesis were addressed based on the results from interview and questionnaires.rnThe results of this research, case studies and survey, show that there are significant roles of mes in the selected manufacturing companies. These roles vary from one company to another. The common roles applicable for the three companies include the maintenance management, document control management, and product tracking & genealogy. rnThis research found that the international vendors for mes system are suitable and can be used in the food and beverage manufacturing companies in indonesia.rnThe management of the selected companies for case studies and participants in the survey agree that mes system could enhance or support the implementation of good corporate governance (gcg).
