Examining the Relationship between Emotional Intelligence, Leadership Style and Organizational Climate in CNOOC SES Ltd.
This thesis is based on a study conducted to investigate the relationship between the emotional intelligence competencies and managerial styles of CNOOC SES LTD., and the organizational climate of their departments. CNOOC Managers completed self-ratings on emotional intelligence and managerial styles questionnaires, and their subordinates completed the same evaluation on them. CNOOC Managers and their subordinates both rated the organizational climate in their departments. The samples of this study are taken from 30 managers of CNOOC SES LTD. from various levels and departments across the organization.nThree instruments were used for the survey and data collection: the Emotional Competence Inventory (ECI), The Managerial Style Inventory (MSI), and the Organizational Climate Survey II (OCS II). Such instruments were developed by HayGroup. Accordingly, this thesis is based on a survey conducted by HayGroup under the contract with CNOOC SES Ltd. from March to July 2005.nSimple correlation analyses (r pearson) were employed to examine correlation between emotional intelligence, leadership styles and organizational climate. This research found there were less significant correlation between emotional intelligence competencies and leadership styles, and almost no significant correlation between emotional intelligence competences and organizational climate at company level (in group). nnHowever, there was significant correlation between leadership styles and organizational climate. Moreover, emotional intelligence competences of individuals have some significant correlation with their leadership styles individually (rather than collectively), and in turn with organizational climate. The survey reports of individuals should then be helpful for them to improve their emotional intelligences and overall performance. Recommendations are made particularly to staffs (undergraduates and above in education level) while other measures may be more suitable non-staff level group.
