Improvement in the extraction of shikimic acid from palm oil mill effluent
Shikimic acid is a substantial compound that acts as a precursor for the synthesis of the oseltamivir drug (Tamiflu) that used in the treat influenza viruses type A and B including H5N1or avian flu. The objective of this research is to improve shikimic acid extraction from Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME). This research was conducted with liquid-liquid extraction of the organic compound with two solvents: Dichloromethane (DCM) and Tetrachloroethylene (TCE). There are two parameters used in the experiments which are extraction solvent ratio and mixing time. The extraction ratio 60:40 with mixing time of 15 minutes has the highest yield in both extraction solvent which are 8.897% and 6.763%. The extraction followed with analysis method using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR)
