Designing, constructing and analyzing a polypropylene rod extruder with temperature control for rapid prototyping machine

An affordable rapid prototyping machine using a locally available raw material is needed by the rapid prototyping industry. The purpose of this thesis is to design, construct and analyze an extruder using thermoplastic rod as raw material, and to construct a model of rapid prototyping machine. To do this Fused Deposition Modeling technique is implemented where an extruder melts the thermoplastic rod to produce three-dimensional objects. Polypropylene and Polyethylene are investigated as raw materials, where the former is preferable in this research due to its better controllability compared to the latter. A temperature control system is implemented to regulate the temperature of the extruder so that a good melting condition of raw material can be achieved to obtain a good feeding in liquid state. Feeding requires feed rate control of the raw material in solid state. Furthermore, coordination of motions is controlled to produce well-structured product. Experiments building hollow cylindrical and sheet shape products show promising results in a sense that the proposed system functions as expected. In conclusion, the purpose of this thesis is achieved with a good result as expected.
