Development of method to produce silver bird nests
Silvery bird nest was sold at much higher price with a price of Rp 17 million/kg compared to fresh harvested bird nest with a price of Rp 8 million/kg. The primary purpose of this research was to study the influence of various chemical solutions on whitening bird nest and provide information about chemical residues that might left after chemical treatments. Bird nest treated with hydrogen peroxide had the most silvery appearance compared to other treatments. Results of consumer preference test suggested that the treated one was well accepted, and even a bit higher in preference compared to natural bird nest in the market. Bird nest treated with hydrogen peroxide was better than titanium dioxide since it did not leave any sediment that gave opaque appearance and did not leave any residue. Sodium sulfite was not recommended because it left residue that was still considered high even small concentration used.
