The Antecedents of career expectation from hotel & tourism students in Jakarta. Study case: hotel & tourism program in 4 universities

The hospitality industry is major service sector in the world economy. It is said to have its negative working conditions including weak internal labour markets, poor employment conditions, low salary, and instability of employment. Due to unfavourable characteristics that hospitality industry may provide, retention of highly skilled hospitality graduates is becoming more concern as a hotelier in the future. The purpose of the study was to better understand what undergraduate students in Hotel and Tourism (HT) program in Jakarta and Tangerang areas expected for their future as well as the antecedents of their career expectations. Different types of internal and external factors and career goals expectations were examined. This obtained data were analyzed with SPSS program. A population sample of 97 undergraduate students from HT program at four different universities in Jakarta and Tangerang areas were surveyed. Students reported a variety factors that influence to join in the HT program as a base before stepping ahead into career life. The internal factors most reported were self-interest, interest in travel / work overseas, and suited to work in the industry. Lots of employment opportunity, interesting and fun, and have availability of jobs were exposed to be the most external factor affecting students to join in HT program. Result shows that the most internal factor affecting students to have a career in hospitality industry were interested in working abroad, having high quality resources, and expressed desire for challange in work aspects. Good benefit, promotion opportunity, and good working environment were found to be the most external factor for students to pursue after graduation. The interest in the hospitality industry was cited by the students as the major reason they want to enter the industry. Internhip experiences also found has influence students to work in hootel industry in the future. Students outcome expectations such as Students? anticipated hospitality job sector, Students? anticipated department in hotel industry, Students? anticipated job position in 5 years after graduation, Students? first salary expectation, and Students? valuable goals expectation while already obtaining the job are discussed.
