Development of a classification tool for the implementation of the atex directive in the pharmaceutical industry in Indonesia
ATEX (Atmosphères Explosives) directive is the part of European guidelines regulating the explosion protection strategy in manufacturing industry. This guideline introduces the concept of hazardous area classification to reduce the risk of explosion in hazardous area. However, the concept of hazardous area classification in ATEX Directive is often leading to confusion due to its complexity. For this reason, a simple tool is developed to help manufacturers to classify hazardous area and also determine the appropriate explosion protection strategy in hazardous area. The tool is constructed in the form of logic diagram and consists of twelve questions relating critical parameters in hazardous area. By following the questions in classification tool, the manufacturer could classify the zone in their hazardous area. In addition, an explosion protection strategy guide is also developed to help manufacturer determine appropriate equipment intended to be used for each zone in hazardous area.
