Utilization of Palm Oil Mill Effluent to Obtain Shikmic Acid
Being one of the largest palm oil producers, Indonesia leaves a substantial amount of wastes. Therefore, a research for utilization of the waste should be done. the purpose of this research is to utilize the palm oil mill effluent or waste into a more beneficial product in the country. This research is conducted with a pre-treatment and then by extraction of the organic compounds using chloroform from the samples. Samples are treated with a certain condition and the organics inside the sample is extracted using a separatory funnel with a distinguished ratio of the sample: solvent, which the solvent used, is chloroform for the identification and isolation of shikimic acid infrared spectroscopy and thin-layer chromatography is performed. the extracted samples are going through a FT-Infrared analysis to determine whether the shikimic acid is present. the second attempt is to do a thin-layer chromatography analysis to determine if the sample is an exact product which is in this case, shikimic acid. the result from the analysis is that the infrared spectroscopy displayed that the sample is indicated to contain shikimic acid. But according to the result, the thin-layer chromatography (TLC) cannot determine whether the compound that is indicated to be shikimic acid to be exactly the desired compound. in conclusion, the reliability of the research depends on the extraction process, whether the extraction methods and solvent are suitable for the system.
