Diffusion Distillation of Ethanol-Water Mixture

Kusumocahyo, Samuel P. - Personal Name; Suwita, Paulus - Personal Name; Amansyah, Ian Hartono - Personal Name;

This thesis work investigates the effect of temperature, and also the diffusivities of ethanol and water in air as inert gas to the selectivity during a distillation process of ethanol -water mixture. the experiments were done at various temperatures (303 K, 313 K, and 323 K). the difference with normal distillation are that the mixtures is evaporated below the boiling point in the presence of an inert gas(air). an increase of selectivity compared to the normal distillation process can be seen from the shifting of the azeotropic point from 886.0~?î?ÑŒ©EthanolX to 6.0~?î?ÑŒ©EthanolX. the experimental values also supports the theoretical result with the difference in temperature in the distillation flask and the collection flask will have higher effect in the selectivity, while changing the temperatures will only slightly affect the selectivity. the selectivity will vanish when the temperature in the distillation flask are the same with the temperature in the collection flask.
