A Quantitative Analysis of Bullying and Its Influence towards Interpersonal Communication Competence
Bullying has been a serious and continuous problem in todays world ever since it was first documented. the effects of bullying have been found to negatively influence aspects of interpersonal communication competence. This research aims to analyze (a) does bullying have an influence on interpersonal communication competence and (b) whether some aspects of interpersonal communication are more influenced by bullying. Quantitative data are gathered through surveys distributed through online means such as e-mail, Facebook, and Twitter. Results are derived from a total of 133 samples from a population of teenagers aged 13- 18 living in Tangerang. the results found that teenagers of Tangerang with high bully victimization do have lower interpersonal communication competence score compared to those with low bully victimization. Results also indicated that self-disclosure, social relaxation, and assertiveness aspect of interpersonal communication competence are more affected then other aspects. Therefore, it can be concluded that bullying does influence interpersonal communication competence.
