Evaluation and selection of locally produced material as pharmaceutical excipient alternatives to lactose

The aim of this research study was to obtain the alternative material to Lactose as pharmaceutical excipient and to compare the performance in production of tablet using direct compression method. Several reports had shown that the alternative material toLactose was Powdered cellulose, which obtained from natural organic fibers by processing the ?-cellulose. In this research, two types of locally produced rice mill, and one type of wheat flour were selected as substitute materials. Experiments were divided into 2 groups, chemical analysis and pilot scale of tablet processing. Chemical analysis was directed to determine ?-cellulose content, water solubility, and moisture content, because they had the most important effects to tablet processing. Tablet performance was observed by comparing tablet weight, hardness, thickness, and disintegration time between Lactose-formulated tablet and substitute-formulated tablets. The feasible substitute material was rice-mill originated from Solo. Its appearance and performance of the tablets were similar to Lactose-formulated tablet.
