Synergistic topical antioxidant mixture in skin cream containing cold-pressed candlenut oil and green tea concentrates
Antioxidant is considered as very important active ingredient in topical cream to prevent the formation of free radical that initiate skin aging. The mechanisms and capabilities as antioxidant is vary according to type and sources. The combination of several types of antioxidants will give better protection from oxidation compare to single antioxidant. Candlenut (Aleurites moluccana) and green tea (Camellia sinensis) which both are local plants in Indonesia contain high potential antioxidant. Candlenut contains -Tocopherol (lipid soluble antioxidant) with 3.60┬▒0.595% antioxidant activity and green tea contains catechin (water-soluble antioxidant) with 25.77┬▒5.490% antioxdiant activity, combination of these components in topical cream yield higher antioxidant activity with 41.91┬▒2.381% antioxidant. The antioxidant activity is analyzed using the DPPH method. The most preferred composition of cream which yields more synergistic antioxidant activity is cream with the composition of candlenut oil 40% and green tea concentrate 55.3%.
