Mergers and acquisitions in the pharmaceutical industry - a case study of merck's acquisition of serono
The main purpose of this research is to analyze merger and acquisitions in pharmaceutical industry with a case study merck?çös acquisition of serono. This research used both primary and secondary data that analyzed using spss and phstat. Primary data consisted of questionnaires distributed to the doctors. Meanwhile, secondary data were collected from internal sources. Financial performance and market performance were evaluated in term of sales revenue, operating result, return on sales, market share and market position. Market opportunity for ex serono product was also identified. Customer perceptions were also evaluated in term of quality, research, availability of product, promotion, price and partnership. The result show impact of acquisition in indonesia was: ex dist sales revenue grew 47.8% with contribution of former serono?çös products was10.4% in 2009, the year of acquisition. The operating result grew 41.2% and return on sales rose to 30.9% in 2009 from 28% in 2008. There are lot of opportunities after the acquisition for indonesia. There were gaps between merck serono?çös performance versus expectation especially in availability of products and price products. Price and distribution were perceived better before the acquisition. Merck serono indonesia should improve the perception of doctors especially in term of distribution and price.
