Comparative Study of Characteristics of a Successful Expatriate Manager of an International Corporation
Companies are increasingly conducting business on a global level. This leads to the necessity of these corporations to successfully operate subsidiaries in many different countries of the world, confronting them with considerable challenges. Expatriate managers play a crucial role in this international expansion of multinational corporations. This research work aims to establish the key success characteristics of the managers sent overseas.nnIn this research work, a list of characteristics for successful expatriate managers was developed based on an extensive literature review. The list was validated by using a Questionnaire sent to managers working in Brazil, China and Indonesia. A statistical evaluation of the answers of the more than 70 respondents showed a clear profile required for the success of managers abroad.nnThe conclusion is that behavioral, non-technical requirements as well as the own and family's satisfaction of the expatriate manager are significantly more important than technical requirements for her/his assignment. The results also suggest that this profile does no depend on the host country in which the manager is operating.
