Utilization of image processing for quality evaluation and grading of strawberry fruits from their appearance

Pheri, Henny Wijaya - Personal Name; Ahmad, Usman - Personal Name;

Strawberry (/Fragaria/) is one of the agricultural commodities which rnhave a huge economical potential to be expanded commercially. Indonesia rnhas a great opportunity to export this commodity in view of the fact rnthat there is an increase of the productivity of strawberry nowadays. rnHowever, in fact Indonesia only supplies a small portion of the whole rnfruits to the global market. One of the causes for this situation is the rnlow quality of the commodity that is mainly caused by poor post-harvest rnhandling system of the commodity that is done manually. Manual sorting rnand grading requires a lot of workers, dependent on workers and provides rninconsistent and low accuracy yields. Therefore, a more efficient and rnaccurate method is required for sorting and grading to yield more rnuniform products in quality. Image processing can be used as an rnalternative solution for this problem.rnrnThe purposes of the research are to determine the quality parameters of rnstrawberry that can be used in grading process and utilize image rnprocessing method in the process. Then, to validate the image processing rnfor grading strawberry based on the determined quality parameters.rnrnThe material used in this research is strawberry (Fragraria). The rnmaterial has four grades which are grade Super, grade A, grade B and rngrade C. There are 100 samples for each grade. The strawberries are rnobtained from the farmer's garden at Ciwidey and Rancabali, South rnBandung, West Java. The instruments those are used in this research are rncomputer, CCD camera, four 7 Watt fluorescent lamps, blank white paper rnas the background for image capturing, caliper, digital balance, rnrheometer, refractometer.rnrnQuality parameters of strawberry obtained using image processing that rnhave correlation with quality parameters obtained using direct or rndestructive analysis are length from side view, diameter from bottom rnview, area from bottom view, area from side view and perimeter from side rnview with coefficient of determinant (R2) are 0.8686, 0.8789, 0.9732, rn0.9673 and 0.9064 respectively, while the rest (red, green, blue index) rnhave no correlation with direct or destructive analysis.rnrnThe results of validation for grading strawberry using image processing rnwith quality parameter area from bottom and side view are 53%, 43%, 43% rnand 87%, 47%, 43%, 50% and 100% for grade Super, A, B and C respectively.rnrnThe results of validation for grading strawberry using image processing rnwith quality parameter diameter from bottom view are 53%, 57%, 50% and rn90% for grade Super, A, B and C respectively.rnrnThe results of validation for grading strawberry using image processing rnwith quality parameter length from side view are 57%, 53%, 53% and 93% rnfor grade Super, A, B and C respectively.rnrnThe results of validation for grading strawberry using image processing rnwith quality parameter perimeter from side view are 67%, 57%, 43% and rn97% for grade Super, A, B and C respectively.
