Comparison of carrageenan quality from eucheuma cottonii of different regions
This study was conducted to assess the quality of Carrageenan quality from Eucheuma cottonii collected from different regions. The research was conducted by choosing some producers of Eucheuma cottonii in Indonesia, there are Pari Island (Thousand Islands, DKI Jakarta), Permaan Island (Sikka, East Nusa Tenggara), Serangan Island (Badung, Bali), and Bontang (Kutai, East Kalimantan). The extraction of E. cottonii was done using alkali extraction and KCl precipitation/ pressing method. Evaluations were performed for viscosity, gel strength quality, yield, ash content, acid insoluble ash, and sulfate content, and moisture content of the treated samples. Based on the result, the highest yield value was obtained from the treated seaweed from Permaan Island (37.84%┬▒0.86), the highest viscosity values obtained from Permaan Island (28.3 Cps┬▒0.90), and the highest gel strength values obtained from treated seaweed was from Pari Island (434.53 g/cm2┬▒6.15). Entirety of the evaluation treated samples still meet quality specifications standards of carrageenan determined by the Agriculture issued Organization (FAO), the Food Chemicals Codex (FCC) and European Economic Community (EEC).
