Effect of drying technique on the quality of alkali treated cottonii (atc)

A Study on the effect of a drying technique on the quality of Alkali Treated Cottonii (ATC) was conducted. The aim of this research is to observe which method of drying obtains the best quality of ATC and the most efficient in terms of economic for medium-class industry (UKM) that is applicable for seaweed farmers. Treatments observed in this study were drying methods (sun-drying and mechanical drying) and the order of chopping (before and after drying process). The experiment was carried out in two replications. Chemical parameter (water content, sulfate content, ash content, acid insoluble ash content), yield of ATC, physical parameters (gel strength, viscosity, whiteness and water activity), microbial parameter (Total Plate Count) and economic analysis (Return on Sale, Break Even Point, Return on Investment) were investigated. The result showed that the sun-drying method produced ATC with better gel strength and whiteness than that drying with a mechanical dryer. The drying process did not affect the water content, yield, whiteness, ash content, sulfate content, acid insoluble ash content and Total Plate Count. The economic analysis result illustrated that the most visible application for UKM was chopping extracted seaweed and dried by using sun-drying. Thus, it is suggested that ATC has to be dried under the sun and chopped before drying process to obtained good quality and profitable ATC product.
